BENGALURU: The Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) has chalked out a plan to crack down on property tax evaders.

In a survey conducted by the GBA, it was found that 70 per cent of property owners have evaded paying full tax. For example, a property owner may be paying tax for only 100 sqft construction, but may have constructed 130 or 150 sqft of property. Due to this misreporting of tax area, the civic body is losing revenue.

The civic body has planned to use LiDAR laser technology which is being implemented on an experimental basis in the Bengaluru South City Corporation. Houses are being identified through e-PIDs, and through this technology, the floor area is measured.

The GBA Chief Commissioner, M Maheshwar Rao has warned property owners who have under-reported the dimensions to pay taxes now itself to avoid penalties. “We will conduct a special drive to collect the e-PIDs and based on that, we can determine how much tax has to be paid. As per our findings, about 70 per cent of property owners are under-reporting under the Self-Assessment Scheme (SAS) of property tax. If property owners have extended the construction, they should declare and pay up the taxes to avoid penalties”, the chief commissioner said.
