BENGALURU: A man, posing as a retired navy personnel, has been accused of cheating some youths to the tune of lakhs of rupees by promising them ‘confiscated’ gold and iPhones at less price.
The accused, Deepu a.k.a Sandeep Reddy had introduced himself as a retired naval personnel when a youth, Sanjay and his friend Raj had gone on a went on trip to Kodaikanal.
According to Sanjay, Sandeep Reddy had met Raj when the latter was visiting Hampi. Reddy later accompanied Sanjay and Raj to Kodaikanal. He however, cheated Sanjay by winning his trust taking the names of big politicians. He had even shown gunshot wounds to make believe them believe that he had worked in the Navy.
Sandeep Reddy allegedly took Rs 1.14 lakh from Sanjay promising to get him iPhone and gold at Rs 3,000 per gram. He asked Sanjay to transfer the money into his wife’s account and then started evading Sanjay. When Sanjay asked for the money back as he did not receive the gold even after giving money, Sandeep Reddy asked him give another Rs 40,000 saying there is 10 gram extra gold.
Speaking to the media, Sanjay said, “Though I was sceptical, Sandeep convinced me saying that he had taken voluntary retirement from the Navy and showed me some gunshot wounds and marks on the shoulder due to handling weapons. I transferred the money in two tranches through UPI and IMPS to his wife’s account. When I called him to ask about the gold he had promised, he said he was in Andhra Pradesh for the inauguration of the Bhogapuram airport and was scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has cheated another friend of mine, who is from Andhra Pradesh and lives in Chennai”.
After getting suspicious, Sanjay has lodged a complaint with the Byadarahalli police station. It has come to light that Sandeep Reddy has taken money from many claiming to be close to top political leaders and further investigation is under way.
