BENGALURU: The Bengaluru South City Corporation has partnered with ‘Park Lens’ to implement an advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based smart parking system on a pilot basis in Jayanagar, a high-traffic zone. To ensure smooth implementation and coordination among the traffic police and Bescom, Corporation Commissioner K N Ramesh chaired a meeting on Thursday.
Angular Parking Lines
Discussing parking models, the chief engineer noted that introducing angular parking would prevent cross-parking and haphazard parking. This design accommodates more vehicles without causing significant obstruction to passing traffic during entry or exit.
The commissioner directed officials to draft a scientific layout that maximizes road space utilization while prioritizing pedestrian safety in busy commercial and residential hubs like Jayanagar.
AI cameras and QR code-based digital payments
Park Lens will deploy an AI camera network to identify vacant parking spots in real-time. Citizens can scan on-site QR codes to pay hourly parking fees directly via UPI. Company representatives highlighted that digital payment is mandatory within the first five minutes of parking.
Two-tier fines for violations
Strict enforcement will follow a two-tier penalty structure for non-compliance:
1. Parking without paying the required fee within the allotted time (Unpaid violation).
2. Overstaying beyond the paid duration without extending the time digitally (Overstay violation).
In both cases, automated alerts will be triggered. Enforcement officers on-site will apply wheel clamps to defaulting vehicles and affix penalty receipts to the windshield. Vehicles will be released only after the fine is settled.
Pilot testing on select roads soon
Before a full-scale rollout, the meeting resolved to initiate a pilot test on key roads in Jayanagar. The commissioner stated that the system will be fully implemented after evaluating public feedback, technical performance, and traffic improvements.
Directives to Bescom for uninterrupted power supply
The commissioner instructed Bescom officials to ensure continuous power supply for the AI cameras and sensors. Additionally, Park Lens representatives were permitted to utilize city streetlight poles to mount the cameras.
Additional commissioner Dr Naveen Kumar Raju, DCP (Traffic-South Division) Gopal Byakod, Chief Engineer Basavaraj Kabade, Bescom executive engineer Yogesh, technical representatives from Park Lens, and other senior officials were present.
