DAVANAGERE: In a disturbing incident at Nalkudare village in Channagiri taluk, a pet dog died on the spot after its face was blown apart when a suspicious object kept inside a plastic cover exploded immediately after the dog bit it, on Sunday.

The dog belonged to Arekere Rudresh of the village and used to accompany him when he went to graze cattle in the field. Seeing a plastic cover by the roadside, the dog bit it thinking there might be food inside, and it exploded instantly. As soon as it put its mouth to the plastic cover, it exploded, leaving the dog’s face mangled and killing it.

The sound of the blast was heard up to about 1 kilometre away, causing panic among villagers. It resembled the kind of explosive used to control wild boars, and villagers have demanded that concerned officials immediately visit the spot, inspect it, and send the explosive object to a laboratory to identify what it was. The incident occurred under the jurisdiction of Santebennur police station.
