CHIKKAMAGALUR: Returning Officer Gaurav Kumar Shetty has announced that BJP candidate D N Jeevaraj has won the Sringeri Assembly seat after the recount of postal votes. A certificate confirming that Jeevaraj is the MLA of Sringeri Assembly constituency has been sent to candidate D N Jeevaraj by email.

Jeevaraj received the certificate at the district commissioner’s office on Monday. Henceforth, BJP’s D N Jeevaraj is the MLA of Sringeri and Congress’ T D Rajegowda, who had been MLA for the past three years, is now a former MLA. This is a setback for Congress, which had been boasting of having all five Congress MLAs in the district.

Earlier, Gaurav Kumar Shetty had said the result would be submitted to the court and the Election Commission. The High Court had directed that a recount be conducted and the result announced. The election officer had not announced the result earlier due to confusion and objections raised during the recount. D N Jeevaraj’s lawyers had also issued a notice demanding that the result be declared.
