Five children die after drowning in separate incidents

CHIKKAMAGALUR, CHIKKABALLAPUR: Four children drowned and one child is in critical condition while they were trying to catch a duck at Karanji Lake in Aralaguppe village in Chikkamagalur taluk.

The deceased children are Mahadiya, Arunus, Nayus and Abdul Rahman. Four-year-old Arman has survived. All the deceased were children aged between 5 and 10 years. They died while trying to catch a duck that had gone into the lake when the tragedy occurred.

The children had come to a relative’s house. Parents of the deceased children were seen wailing in front of the hospital. The Rural police visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered and further investigation is under way.

In another incident, a 15-year-old girl drowned and died in Srinivasa Sagar reservoir, a popular tourist spot in Chikkaballapur taluk. The deceased, Shabiya, was originally from Shiggaon in Haveri district.

Shabiya had come to her relatives’ house in Bengaluru as school was closed for holidays. On Monday, she had gone to Srinivasa Sagar reservoir with her relatives. While 10–15 family members were having a meal, Shabiya and four or five others went to play in the water. Unable to gauge the depth, Shabiya drowned in the water.

Fire department personnel and Chikkaballapur Rural Police visited the spot and shifted the body to Chikkaballapur District Hospital mortuary. A case has been registered at the Chikkaballapur Rural police station.
