HUBBALLI: Upset over crop damage and debt burden, a farmer committed suicide at Kodliwada village in Kundagol taluk on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Hanumappa Yallappa Balehosur (65).
The farmer attempted suicide by consuming pesticide. He was rushed to KIMS, Hubballi, for treatment, but succumbed.
The farmer had taken a loan of Rs 1.50 lakh from the Baradwada branch of Canara Bank. The bank officials had allegedly put pressure on the farmer for loan repayment. Hanumappa had also cultivated two acres of his land and leased out around 9 acres. But the crops were washed away in the heavy rain and floods.
The farmer was deeply upset by the crop loss and debt burden and committed suicide. A case has been registered at Kundgol police station.
