HASSAN: A 23-year-old woman died while a 24-year-old rider sustained serious injuries after the motorcycle they were riding went over a speed breaker at the industrial area here on Sunday evening. The deceased was identified as Priya and the injured is Swathi.
Priya and Swathi were riding on a Royal Enfied Meteor motorcycle to a function in Hanumantapura village when they failed to notice a speed breakers and lost control of the vehicle. Priya, who was sitting at the back, died on the spot due to head injuries while Swathi, who was riding the motorcyel, is in critical condition.
The victims’ families and locals are outraged, blaming the Hassan Municipal Corporation for installing unscientific speed breakers that led to the accident. They claimed that several accidents have occurred at the same spot, resulting in fatalities and injuries, but the authorities have failed to take action.
The victims, Priya and Swathi, were final-year MCA students at a private college and were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident. The deceased’s father, a BSF jawan posted in Rajasthan, is reportedly shocked by the news and was expected to arrive in Hassan on Monday evening. The last rites will be held on Tuesday.
The incident has sparked widespread anger and demands for the authorities to take immediate action to ensure road safety. The police have registered a case, and an investigation is under way. The incident has raised concerns about the safety measures in place and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic rules.
The locals are demanding that the authorities install proper warning signs and white stripes on the speed bumpers to prevent such accidents in the future. District In-charge Minister Krishna Byre Gowda has assured the family of the victims that he will look into the matter and take necessary action. The government has also announced compensation for the family of the deceased.
