BENGALURU: Garbage disposal issue has intensified in the city, with waste piling up on the streets. The disposal of waste has been halted at the Mittaganahalli-Bellalli quarry, leaving hundreds of garbage trucks stranded.
The villagers have blocked the disposal of waste, citing non-release of village development funds. The funds, which were due for the past two years, have not been released, leading to the shutdown of the waste disposal unit.
The Solid Waste Management Ltd had made some demands, including the release of additional funds for the local area, which have not been met. The villagers are adamant that they will not allow the disposal of waste until their demands are met.
As a result, over 150 garbage trucks are stranded, and the city’s streets are filling up with waste. The situation is likely to worsen, with the possibility of a garbage strike looming large.
The authorities are facing criticism for their handling of the situation, with locals accusing them of being insensitive to the issue. The standoff has led to a buildup of waste in the city, with many areas reeking of garbage.
The situation is getting out of hand, with garbage trucks and autos parked on the streets, causing inconvenience to the public. The authorities will need to take immediate action to resolve the issue and prevent a full-blown garbage crisis in the city.
Reacting to the issue, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said, “No problem, let them do what they want, we will deal with the issue. They cannot take the law into their hands, we will do what we have to do”.
Greater Bengaluru Authority Chief Commissioner M Maheshwar Rao said, “Some mixed waste is going to Bellahalli and we are taking steps to reduce it. People should also cooperate by segretating waste properly. We are working to find a permanent solution and tenders will be called soon”.
