KALABURAGI: Three people were caught red-handed while trying to smuggle ganja into the jail by throwing a bundle over the compound wall on Monday afternoon. The incident has raised questions about the security measures in place at the jail.
The Kalaburagi Central Jail was in the news recently, with videos of inmates enjoying luxury and contraband surfacing online. In one such incident, After a video of inmates enjoying a party inside the jail had gone viral, DGP Alok Kumar had ordered an inquiry. He had instructed the jail authorities to ensure that contraband like ganja, beedis and cigarettes are not smuggled into the jail.
Despite these instructions, the attempts to smuggle contraband continued. The three arrested individuals, identified as Pintu, Anil and Vijay Jadhav, were caught by the KSISF security staff while trying to throw a box of ganja over the jail wall. They were riding a bike and were caught on the spot. The three accused are residents of Basava Nagar in Kalaburagi.
Police Commissioner Dr Sharanappa said, “A complaint has been registered at the Farhatabad police station regarding the three men trying to throw contraband over the jail wall. The contraband was seized and the three men arrested. We are trying to identify whom the contraband was meant for and we will register cases against them too”.
The security staff handed them over to the Farhatabad police, who have registered a case against them. The police are investigating the matter, including the possibility of involvement of jail staff in the smuggling. The authorities are trying to determine who the contraband was meant for and whether the inmates had ordered it.
