BENGALURU: With the mention of Bengaluru, most people’s minds jump to the city’s traffic problem. No matter which direction you go, you can always see traffic. Often the city’s traffic makes international headlines as well, along with the city’s growth.

Interestingly, what could be adding to the traffic congestion is the fact that vehicles are being bought in record numbers and if the trend continues, the traffic situation will reach an even worse point.

From April to the end of October, about 4,00,000 private vehicles have been registered in Bengaluru. Compared with previous years, this is an increase of roughly 10 per cent. Among private vehicles, the highest number registered are two‑wheelers, with cars in second place.

In April 2025, 36,888 two‑wheelers and 12,278 cars were registered while in May, the figures were 39,086 bikes and 11,225 cars. In June, 42,210 bikes and 11,184 cars were added. In July, 40,569 bikes and 11,026 cars were purchased while in August, 45,595 bikes and 13,318 cars were registered. In September, the numbers were 38,990 bikes and 9,997 cars. In October, 59,863 bikes and 15,953 cars were bought. Altogether, over the seven months, Bengaluru saw 3,03,201 two‑wheelers and 84,963 cars registered.

Up to March 2025, Bengaluru had 1.05 crore private‑vehicle registrations. This rose over the next seven months to 1.09 crore. Apart from this, commercial vehicles are also on the roads, and it is evident that private vehicle use is higher than public transport in the city.

Moreover, out of a total of 3.6 crore private vehicles in the state, Bengaluru alone accounts for 1.9 crore registrations, which is also cited as a reason for the city’s traffic congestion.

Additional Transport Commissioner Omkareshwari said tha the number of vehicle purchases and registration is increasing day by day. “There are 3,45,90,000 registered vehicles in the state, of which 35,79,000 are transport vehicles. There are 1,22,550,000 vehicles in Bengaluru out of which 13,250,000 are transport vehicles and 1.9 crore non-transport vehicles, including two-wheelers. From April to October, 4.48 lakh vehicles were registered in Bengaluru alone and a total of 11 lakh have been registered across the state”, she pointed out.
