Basavaraj Bommai throws hat in ring for BJP state president’s post?

BENGALURU: Amid the talk in political circles about a change in the Karnataka unit president of the BJP, speculation is swirling around former chief minister and Haveri-Gadag MP Basavaraj Bommai, especially after he held discussions with the party seniors in Delhi over the last two days.

Earlier, Union minister V Somanna and MLA V Sunil Kumar had thrown their hats in the ring for the state BJP president’s election. Now, Basavaraj Bommai has held meetings in Delhi. The faction which is opposed to Vijayendra has been coming up with fresh names as alternatives.

Basavaraj Bommai left for Delhi on Tuesday and returned on Friday affternoon. In Delhi, he is believed to have held secret meetings with senior party leaders where he is believed to have pitched himself for the role of state president by assuring to put an end to all dissident activities and taking along all sides together.

Current president B Y Vijayendra’s three-year term ends in December and he has categorically said he will continue as state president. The party, meanwhile, is electing new presidents for different state units before the election of the national president.
