BENGALURU: A woman dentist has been arrested for throwing her four-year-old mentally challenged daughter from the fourth floor balcony of their apartment complex in Sampangiram Nagar on Thursday. After throwing the child to its death, she too tried to end her life, but was saved by other residents. The entire incident was captured on CCTV camera.
Sushma Bharadwaj and her husband Kiran, a software engineer, are residents of Advaith Ashraya apartment in CKC Garden. A little after 3 pm on Thursday, Sushma can be seen with the child strolling in the balcony when she tries to throw the child from the fourth floor, but hesitates. After a few seconds, she flings the child to the ground and then climbs over the balcony railings to end her life. The child died instantly.
A little while later, a woman spots Sushma precariously perched on the balcony and raises alarm. Other neighbours then came out of their houses to find Sushma standing dangerously on the edge of the balcony. They immediately pulled her back.
The apartment residents rushed the child to a private hospital from where she was taken to NIMHANS.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Srinivas Gowda said they received information about a child brought to NIMHANS with injuries. “When we checked, we came to know that the mother had thrown the child from the balcony. Based on a complaint from the child’s father, we have taken up investigation and booked the mother for murder and arrested her”.
A few months ago, Sushma had allegedly abandoned the child at a railway station. But her husband Kiran had rescued the child from there.
