Five dead, four injured after car, motorcycle crash on Bengaluru-Chennai expressway

KOLAR: Five people, including two children of a family, died while four others were seriously injured after an MUV crashed with a motorcycle on the newly opened section of the Bengaluru-Chennai express highway late on Sunday night.

The family of Santosh, who hail from Kammasandra in KGF taluk, were returning home in a Toyota Innova car after visiting a relative in hospital in Bengaluru when the accident occurred near Kuppanahalli in Bangarpet taluk. Among those dead include Santosh’s father-in-law Mahesh (55), mother Rathnamma (60), daughter Udvita (3), an unborn child his wife Sushmita was carrying, and the motorcycle rider Srinath (30) of Dodduru village in Bangarpet taluk.

Rathnamma and Sushmita’s (right) daughter died in the accident while she is battling for life.

The injured include Santosh’s wife Sushmita, son Virat, mother-in-law Sujata and the car driver Arun. They were shifted to a hospital in Bengaluru for treatment. Santosh is a manager at the Koti Linga Kshetra and had stayed back at Kammasandra to celebrate his birthday on Sunday.

On hearing the sound of the crash, villagers of Kuppanahalli informed the police who shifted the injured to hospital. Police said the motorcycle was on the wrong side of the expressway and the car plunged into the fields in an attempt to avoid crashing into it.
