9 kg of gold worth Rs 2.3 crore, cash of Rs 9.35 lakh seized at police checkposts

CHIKKAMAGALUR, CHIKKODI: The police have seized 9 kg of gold worth about Rs 2.3 crore, which was being transported in a pickup truck at the MC Halli checkpost in Tarikere taluk on Wednesday evening. Two people who were in the pickup truck have also been taken into custody.

Sarees stored in a godown were also seized.

With the Assembly election approaching, the police have set up checkpost across the state to curb cash and other gifts being given to voters in an attempt to lure them. During the checking under the guidance of Chikkamagaluru SP Uma Prashanth, the police found a huge gold necklace and gold biscuits being transported in four boxes without valid documents. A case has been registered at the Tarikere police station in this connection.

The police flying squad also seized 666 sarees, reportedly meant for distribution, which were stored int he godown of a private transport company, based on specific information.

Cash amounting to over Rs 9 lakh was seized at checkposts in Belagavi district.

In similar cases, Rs 9.35 lakh cash was seized at various checkposts in Belagavi district. While Rs 1.9 lakh was seized at Bugate Alur checkpost in Hukkeri taluk, Rs 8 lakh was seized at the Harugeri checkpost in Raibagh taluk.
