BENGALURU: A 6-year-old girl child accidentally fell into a lift pit at an under-construction building and died at Sultanpet on late Friday night. The deceased was identified as Maheshwari, daughter of Mallappa and Kamalamma.
The body of the child found floating in the pit on Saturday morning. The City Market police visited the spot and gathered information about the incident.
The building belongs to one Vikram. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) had granted permission to construct a five-storeyed building, but the owner is constructing six storeys in violation of norms and there are no precautionary measures taken at the construction site. Though filled with water, the lift pit had not even been cordoned off.
Maheshwari was one among the three children of Mallappa and Kamalamma couple. “We are labourers working in Yelahanka. We had come to a relative’s house in Sultanpet for my husband Mallappa’s eye treatment near K R Market on Friday”, said Kamalamma, the mother of the deceased child.
She further said, “On Friday evening, I was feeding another child and Maheshwari was playing outside with other children. I had seen her twice while she was playing, but the third time, she was not there. We searched for her everywhere. Finally, we found her in the four-foot-deep pit filled with water. We shifted her to a hospital immediately, but she died before we could reach there”.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West division) Lakshman B Nimbargi said, “The child accidentally slipped into the lift fit on the ground floor at the construction site and died as there were no safety measures. A complaint has ben registered against the owner of the building, contractor and engineer. Further investigation is under way”.
