2 cops suspended for harassing couple

BENGALURU: The Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Division has suspended two police personnel from Sampigehalli police on Sunday after they allegedly harrassed a couple late at night and extorted Rs 1,000 from them when they were on night patrol on December 8.

Karthik Patri, the victim shared about the harrasement in his Twitter account.

The victims, Karthik Patri and his wife, were returning home from their friend’s birthday cake-cutting ceremony. When they were a few metres away from their entrance gate, a Hoysala patrol vehicle stopped, and two police personnel asked for ID cards and other documents. When they showed their ID cards from their phones, they took their phones and started quizzing them about their relationship, family background, work place and other things.

The policemen then took out a challan book and started writing their names, and a challan of Rs 3,000 was issued to the couple for roaming at night. When they pleaded, they were allegedly harassed further. Karthik finally paid Rs 1,000 through Paytm. The victim shared the incident on Twitter, and after the tweet went viral, the DCP of the North Division assured that appropriate action would be taken.

North Division DCP Anoop Shetty shared on Twitter, “Two police personnel from  @sampigehallips responsible for the incident have been identified, suspended, and departmental action has been initiated. @BlrCityPolice will not tolerate deviant behaviour from its staff”. He also tagged @DCPNEBCP and @Karthik_Patri, the complainant.
