1,982 fresh cases of dengue detected across Karnataka in a week

BENGALURU: Following the detection of the Zica virus infection in Raichur, now dengue fever gripped in Silicon city. As many as 50 fresh dengue cases are detected every day in the state capital.

According to experts, Zika virus infection is caused by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. If dengue cases rise, there may be a possibility of more Zica virus cases coming to light, they feel.

Enzootic cycle and epidemic cycle

In the last one week, 1,982 dengue fever cases were detected across the state. Compared to last year, there has been a 30 per cent increase in the number of cases.

So far, five people have died due to dengue — one in each of Hassan, Vijayapura, Dharwad and Tumkur, and two in Chikkaballapur. The number of dengue-related deaths have also seen an increase.

Dengue: Transmission and symptoms

  • Dengue is transmitted by the female Aedes aegypti mosquitoes .
  • It breeds in stagnant water. The outbreaks are usually during the monsoon.
  • People should be cautious about dumping waste, stagnant water or liquids near their houses.

Symptoms:

Headache, fever, cold, throat pain, vomiting, stomachache, body pain (eye pain, typically behind the eyes, muscle, joint, or bone pain), diarrhoea

Vulnerable groups who need to take care include those who have less immunity, children, pregnant women and elders.
