Zika virus claims first victim in Shivamogga, another case detected in Sagar

SHIVAMOGGA: The Zika virus has claimed its first victim in the district with a 74-year-old man succumbing to the disease at his residence at Gandhinagar here. Meanwhile, a second case of Zika virus infection has been detected.

The victim had been suffering from fever since June 19 and tests confirmed Zika virus infection on June 21. He was undergoing treatment at a private hospital, but the family members had got him discharged on Thursday and took him home. The man, who also had comorbidies, but no travel history, died on Friday.

Meanwhile, a youth from Sagar has been detected with Zika virus infection. Surprisingly, he has no history of recent travel.

Amidst the spread of dengue, the detection of Zika virus cases has put the health authorities in the district on high alert.
