MYSURU: A 23-year-old youth, who was angry that this grandmother did not open the door for him, killed her by pushing her to the ground and then smothered her to death with a pillow. To hide his crime, he dumped the body near the backwaters of the Krishna Sagar (KRS) dam and set it on fire. The police have since arrested the youth.

The accused Supreeth (23) is a BCA student at a private college in the city. He took inspiration from a Korean web series to dispose of his grandmother’s body. His father is the principal at a prestigious college and his mother is a teacher. His grandmother Sulochana (75), who was staying with her sister all along, had started living with her son’s family at their house in Gayathripuram only three months ago.

Supreeth dumped the body in a pit in the backwaters of the KRS.

Sulochana apparently used to taunt and shout at her grandson Supreeth over trivial issues. On May 28, Supreeth returned home from college and was in a hurry to get back to submit a project work. Despite knocking several times, the grandmother, who was alone in the house, did not respond.

Finally, when she opened the door after half an hour, he picked an argument with her and pushed her to the ground. When she fell unconscious, Supreeth, who got scared, suffocated her to death with a pillow, Superintendent of Police Seema Latkar said.

Mysuru SP Seema Latkar said they tracked missing person’s complaints and identified the dead woman.

Afraid about his parents, Supreeth wrapped his grandmother’s body in a plastic sheet and packed it in a cardboard box. Later, he took the body in a cousin’s car and drove around the whole day. The family lodged a missing person’s complaint at the Nazarbad police station. He then went to Sagarakatte near the KRS backwaters, dumped it in a pit and set it on fire by dousing it in petrol, the SP said.

When the burnt body was found, the police managed to retrieve some strands of hair and a pair of spectacles. Then then went over missing persons cases and narrowed down on the case registered at the Nazarbad police station. When they questioned Supreeth, he began giving evasive answers, raising doubts.

When the police questioned him further, he admitted that his grandmother would scold him often and he was angered by this. He took inspiration from a Korean web series, suffocated her, wrapped the body in plastic sheet and stuffed it in a box and later set it on fire.
