BENGALURU: Till recently, some youths from North India were involved in misusing photos of girls by hacking their social media accounts to extort them for money. Now, a youth from Bengaluru has been caught by a woman for creating fake online profiles and indulging extortion. The woman claims that she filed a complaint with the police regarding blackmail, but they have not taking any action against the youth and ignored her complaint saying that it was deepfake.
According to the complaint, the youth from Uttarahalli AGS Layout used to download photos and videos of women from their Facebook and Instagram accounts, and created fake profiles. He cheated hundreds of people by taking money from them and was finally caught redhanded.
The accused is Raghavendra, a resident of Uttarahalli AGS Layout. One of the victims, Triveni from Kamalanagar, was fed up with the torture of the cyber criminal Raghavendra. He had created a fake Facebook account using Triveni’s photos and videos and duped many people over a year and demanded money from other people. He used to get money by chatting on Facebook Messenger with friends and relatives. When this came to Triveni’s attention, through her friends, he was cornered and the Basaveshwar Nagar police were informed.
Raghavendra had allegedly created fake online accounts in the name of eight women and duped people of Rs 80 lakh so far. Triveni claimed that the police, after receiving her complaint, suggested that she reach a compromise instead of imposing IPC sections against accused.
The police seized the mobile phone of Raghavendra, who committed the act, and when it was checked, they found that he had chatted with many women, taken money and created fake accounts.
Triveni questioned how it would be safe for women if the police declined to investigate the case. The police have been irresponsible by not getting the fake accounts deleted, she claimed.
