Youth dies, two injured after falling into pit dug by BWSSB

BENGALURU: A youth died and two others were severely injured after falling into a huge pit dug up by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) at Kommaghatta Circle near Kengeri on Sunday night.

The deceased youth was identified as Saddam Pasha (20) while Umran Pasha and Mubarak Pasha were seriously injured in the incident. The three are residents of JJ Nagar and the incident took place when they were riding triples on a scooter.

The BWSSB has dug a huge pit to lay pipes near Kommaghatta Circle and put up barricades around the pit and closed off a section of the road to undertake the work.

Saddam Pasha was riding the scooter while the two others were riding pillion. It is said that Saddam died of serious injuries. It is speculated that he may have tried to ride the bike at speed through a small space beside the barricades. Locals immediately rushed to help them, lifted the injured from the pit and admitted them to a nearby hospital.

Santosh, an eyewitness, said, “I was going on Kengeri Road at 8.45pm yesterday. The three youths came on a bike and overtook me. The rider was popping wheelies and speeding. Since the headlight of the scooter was not falling on the road, they may have directly into the pit without seeing the barricades which were ahead. We lifted them up and took them to a hospital. One of the youths lost his life to bike stunts. The water board had put up barricades, but the rider was overspeeding and crashed through the barricade”.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-West) Anitha B Haddannavar said, “The three youths who were on the scooter crashed through the barricade and fell into the pit. One of the youths, Saddam Pasha, who was riding the scooter, died while two others were injured and have been hospitalised. Based on Umran Pasha’s complaint, a case has been registered at Kengeri police station against Saddam Pasha, the BWSSB and the contractor carrying out the work”.
