MANDYA: The elder brother of a Hindu youth was on Monday night attacked by a group of Muslim youths, wielding weapons, at Bellur in Nagamangala taluk, all because the youth had overtaken a car last Friday. The injured Abhilash has been admitted to the BGS Hospital.
On Tuesday morning, members of Hindu organisations took out a protest march from the BGS Hospital to the Bellur police station. They also raised slogans against the Congress government in the state. Heavy police deployment was made in Bellur in view of the tense situation.
It is suspected that Abhilash was targeted as he had identified himself with a Hindu organisation. The group of Muslim youths even weant near the house of Abhilash’s uncle Nagesh and created a ruckus. His aunt Rashmi locked the door from inside, but the Muslim youths banged on the door and used abusive language, it is alleged.
On Tuesday morning, Abhilash’s parents, along with members of Hindu groups, lodged a complaint in connection with the attack. At this time, a youth was filming the goings on to which those who had gathered at the police station objected and tried to catch him, but he escaped. Three complaints — regarding the attack on Abhilash, the attack on his aunt Rashmi’s house and the police refusal to file a complaint last Friday — were registered in the presence of Police Superintendent Yathish N.
The FIR has listed Naveed, Sufiyan, Imran, Sameer, Mudasheer, Mahammed Hujait, Mahammed Irfan, Syed Ahammed, Syed Sufiyan, Sameer, Syed Vaheed and others as the accused.
Police Superintendent Yathish N said the FIR was registered based on Abhilash’s father’s complaint and a inquiry will be conducted into the refusal by police personnel to file a complaint. “Bellur is peaceful now, but if anyone indulges in criminal activities, strict action will be taken. A complaint by the other side has also been given and we are looking into it”, he said.
