HASSAN: A woman tailor, who runs Jyothi Dress Makers in Hassan, has been accused of cheating several women of crores of rupees. The victims, mostly women, alleged that Hemavati lured customers who came to stitch dresses into investing in a chit fund, promising high returns.

Hemavati allegedly collected lakhs of rupees from several women, promising to pay them back with interest, but instead, she used the money to buy a house in Hassan and claimed to be sending her daughter abroad for engineering studies.

The victims, who lost lakhs of rupees, attacked Hemavati on the street, and a video of the incident has gone viral. The victims, who are still recovering from the loss, have lodged complaints with the police, demanding action against Hemavati and her husband, Virupakshappa, who is also accused of being involved in the scam.

The victims claim that Hemavati and her husband have cheated them of over Rs 3 crore, with one woman alleging that she lost Rs 45 lakh. The Pension Mohalla police have registered cases against Hemavati and are investigating further. The victims have warned others to be cautious and not fall prey to Hemavati’s scams.
