KALABURAGI: A woman staged the kidnap of her own son for a Rs 22 lakh ‘ransom’ at Garib Nawaz Colony here. She has since been arrested by the University police.

Samina Anjum, a resident of Bengaluru, had recently moved to her sister-in-laws’ house in Kalaburagi and both their husbands are working in Saudi Arabia. Recently, the sister-in-law’s husband had sent her a large amount of money. With an eye on the money, Samina staged the kidnap of her son Syed Mukthar Hashmi and sent him away to Pune along with Raziq, an acquaintance on November 6.

Samina then informed about her son going missing and a search was launched for the boy. Later, a kidnap case was registered at the University police station. The next day, a letter was received at the sister-in-law’s house which said that her son Umar had been kidnapped and that she had to pay a ransom of Rs 22 lakh for his release. Samina then started claiming that her son had been kidnapped in place of Umar and started forcing her sister-in-law to pay up the ‘ransom’.

Police Commissioner Dr Sharanappa briefing the media.

When Samina started putting pressue, the sister-in-law’s family approached the police with the letter. Samina then requested the police not to pursue the case. Upon suspicion, the police grilled her and Samina spilled the beans, Police Commissioner Dr Sharanappa said.

“Samina admitted to staging her son’s kidnap with an eye on her sister-in-law’s money. A police team went to Pune and brought back her son. Samina Anjum has been arrested along with Raziq and Mubin for staging the kidnap”, the police commissioner added.
