MANDYA: An aged woman spent four days with the body of her daughter who had died mysteriously. The incident, which occurred at New Tamil Colony in Halahalli Layout in the city, came to light after neighbours notice foul smell emanating from the house.

Roopa (30) had passed away about 4-5 days ago and her mother Nagamma did not inform about this to any of the neighbours. For four days, she did not step out of the house and lay next to her daughter’s body.

When neighbours started getting foul smell, they initially thought that some rodent may have died nearby. But as the stench increased, they also noticed too many flies coming from Nagamma’s house. The neighbours then summoned a mixie repairman to break open the door of Nagamma’s house. As soon as he saw the sight in the house, the repairman ran out screaming.

When the neighbours peeped inside, they saw the rotting body of Roopa and Nagamma sitting next to it. They then informed the police.

The Mandya SP said Roopa was married about 12 years ago and had two children. “Five years ago, she separated from her husband and children, who live in Pandavapura, and was living with her mother. She may have died 3-4 days ago. Based on a complaint by the husband we have registered a case of unnatural death. The post mortem report will reveal the cause of death,” he added.

Locals said that Roopa was working as a Home Guard and that both mother and daughter had taken to drinking.
