Woman ends life over husband’s cricket betting debt of Rs 1 crore

BENGALURU : A woman hailing from Chitradurga committed suicide after her husband lost Rs 1 crore in an online cricket betting addiction. The deceased is Ranjitha (24), an assistant engineer in the minor irrigation department of Hosadurga and wife of Darshan Babu.

Darshan Babu, who was addicted to IPL betting, had borrowed more than Rs 1.5 crore. The woman has written in her death note that she was distressed over harassment from money lenders and hence, was taking the extreme step.

Ranjitha’s body was found on March 19 in the bedroom of her parental house in Holalkere. In her death note, she wrote that moneylenders were responsible for her death. Ranjitha’s father has filed a complaint naming 13 people who illegally gave loans to his son-in-law.

Darshan had lost everything after investing in cricket betting from 2021 to 2023. Sources say those who gave money with the idea of making more money through cricket betting were harassing the couple to return the money. Ranjitha’s father alleged that Darshan still has Rs 54 lakh of loan that he is due to repay.
