BENGALURU: A woman has been arrested by the Commercial Street police for allegedly trying to cheat a jeweller of Rs 2.42 crore after purshasing 2.945 kg of gold from a shop in Commercial Street. The arrested is Shwetha, a resident of Bagalagunte. The police have recovered gold and a car from her.

A few days ago, Shwetha approached a jewellery store in Commercial Street and bought gold articles, but did not pay for it. She had claimed to be close to former minister Varthur Prakash and posed as a gold trader. Later, she did not return the gold nor pay for it following which the jewellery store owner lodged a complaint with the Commercial Street police.

The woman had given the address of former minister Varthur Prakash and the police have now decided to question him in the case. Shwetha allegedly misused pictures she clicked with several politicians and film actors.

Reacting to the woman’s arrest, Varthur Prakash said he came to know about the issue only on Friday on phone. “She had visited by residence about 3-4 months ago and introduced herself as a social worker. Neither she nor the jeweller informed me about the gold purchase. She came to my residence just like many others do. I will present myself before the Commercial Street police on Monday”, he said.

Shwetha had earlier been arrested in a similar case in Yelahanka about seven months ago and had been released on bail, sources said.
