Woman alleges harassment, assault by husband, in-laws for dowry

CHITRADURGA: A government school teacher has been accused of harassing his wife for dowry, assaulting her and even throwing her out of the house. The woman is currently undergoing treatment for her injuries at the district government hospital.

The teacher Kancheshwar, hailing from Jampanayakana Kote village is working at the Jodichikkenahalli government school. Last year, he got married to Halamma of Mydolalu village in Shivamogga district and after three months, started harassing her for dowry, abusing and assaulting her.

After he threw her out of the house a few days ago, Halamma lodged a complaint with the women’s police station. “He was fine only for the first three months after our marriage last July. After that he began harassing me for more dowry. My in-laws would complain to him that I was not looking after them properly and he would hit me for it. My in-laws would also assault me. They wouldn’t let me talk to anyone in my family. My father sold his land and we gave my husband Rs 5 lakh last month”, she said.
