Winter session: MLC to move private member Bill for halal certification ban

The state legislature will meet for the winter session at the Suvarna Vidhana Soudha from December 19.

BENGALURU: Legislative Council member from the BJP, N Ravikumar, has sought permission from the Council Chairman to move a private member’s Bill under Rule 74, to propose and amendment to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, in the upcoming winter session of the legislature.

In the letter, Ravikumar said his proposed amendment is for banning and regulating any private institution, individuals or religious groups from issuing any sort of certification, publicising and collecting a fee for it, except Union and state government agencies and other recognised by the Union and state governments. As a result of the amendment, no additional expenditure will have to be borne by the government and instead, it will earn about Rs 5,000 crore in revenue, Ravikumar claimed.

“In the Karnataka winter session, we want the government to discuss an amendment Bill on the halal certification. Efforts are being made to regulate India’s economy through halal certification and create a parallel Islamic economy. Thousands of crores of rupees are being used for terrorist acts by making halal certification mandatory on all products across India. We request that the state and central governments to introduce suitable reforms in this area. We also want an investigation into the issue”, said Hindu Janajagruthi Samithi leader Mohan.
