BENGALURU: A motorcycle rider died on the spot after a BMTC bus rear-ended his two-wheeler on Mysuru Road near Haleguddadahalli. The bus hit the bike from behind, causing severe head injuries to the rider who died on the spot due to severe bleeding.
This incident comes just a week after another fatal accident involving a BMTC bus where a specially abled man died at Majestic Bus Station. The increasing number of accidents has prompted authorities to take action.
The Transport Department had introduced the Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) in some BMTC buses to improve safety and to prevent accidents. This installation consists of a vision sensor camera, a DMS (Driver Monitoring System) camera, a GPS unit, and an ‘eye watch’, all mounted on the vehicle’s front windshield and interconnected.
This cutting-edge technology alerts drivers about approaching vehicles and monitors their behaviour. The BMTC has installed ADAS technology in 10 buses as a pilot project, but it was not implemented in all buses.
This feature of the device will constantly monitor the movements of buses while providing real-time alerts to the drivers.
Where is ADAS technology, ask citizens as BMTC bus accident cases rise
1. Notifying drivers about the need to maintain safe distances between vehicles
2. Monitors driver’s attention. The eye watch installed in the driver’s compartment detects the distance between other vehicles through a red signal.
3. If the driver is talking on the mobile phone or falling asleep, the driver monitoring system will alert the driver immediately through a signal.
4. Gives warnings if drivers are distracted or drowsy.
With accidents involving BMTC buses increasing in the city, citizens are raising questions about installation of ADAS in the vehicles.
