Watch out! Food delivery app links are latest bait for online fraudsters

BENGALURU: Two people have lost lakhs of rupees after downloading fradulent apps in the name of online food delivery, in separate cases. The incident was reported in the jurisdiction of East CEN Crime Station, Bengaluru City.

After the Bescom bill frauds, bank loan frauds and credit card frauds, now tricksters are using apps which claim to be food delivery services. Those who download the fake food delivery apps, like Khandani Rajdhani Food and Ruchi Sagar, undoubtedly stand to lose their hard-earned money.

In two instances, Imran Ulla Baig had lost Rs 2,23,958 while Deepika had lost Rs 61,000 in fraudulent transactions.

On November 6, Imran, a businessman, ordered food after seeing a food delivery app advertisement on Facebook, and he called the given contact number. They introduced themselves as Khandani Rajdhani Restaurant and told him to send Rs 250 to confirm the food order. They then sent him a link to download the app. Following the conman’s advice, Imran shared his bank account details and credit card number with them. In no time his account was debited for a total of Rs 2,23,958.

In the other case, Deepika, an engineer in Bengaluru, registered a fraud case at the East CEN crime station. On November 9, Deepika called a number that she saw on Facebook. A unidentified person received the call and introduced himself as being from Khandani Rajdhani Restaurant. Later, the conman sent her a link asking her to download the Ruchi Sagar App. Following the conman’s instruction, Deepika shared the details of her credit card. After some time, a total Rs 61,000 was deducted from her account.

Amidst their hectic schedules, many people prefer online services, right from groceries to movie tickets. The cyber crime police have cautioned people to check properly before clicking on any links or installing unverified apps.
