YADGIR: The Waqf Board has taken over thousands of acres of agricultural land belonging to 1,440 farmers in Yadgir district, leading to anger among the farming community.
These farmers had been cultivating the land for generations and there was no mention of waqf board in any of the documents. But suddenly, in 2020, land records show them as waqf land.
In 2014, farmer Sunil Havaldar of Kongadi village, transferred their land registered in his father Ambanna’s name to his name. Even at that time, there was no mention of waqf board in the land records. Some time later, some of the farmers had given up part of their land for laying of railway tracks.
The issue of waqf board claiming the land came to light when the farmers applied for compensation in 2020. The farmers have approached court over the pending compensation totalling over Rs 200 crore. Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha vice-president Lakshmikanth has warned of strong protest if the land records are not set right immediately.
