BAGALKOT: Villagers of Kankanawadi in Jamakhandi taluk have achieved an astounding feat by building a floating bridge across the Krishna river. The bridge connects the village to Kankanawadi Guheshwara Nadugadde where there is a temple of Guheshwara and 150 families too live there.
Every Monday and on every new moon day, a large number of devotees visit the temple. In order to facilitate easy movement of people, the villagers pooled in Rs 25 lakh and constructed the floating bridge whic is 800 feet long and eight feet wide.
The villagers used 300 plastic barrels, 20 tons of steel, one quintal of plastic rope and 10 tons of wood to build the brige. They employed two welding contractors and one carpenter and the farmers themselves worked as labourers to build the bridge over one-and-half months.
So far, the villagers had to use boats to cross to the other side of the river. Now, they have their own bridge, constructed with no help from the government. The villagers had previously achieved another feat by joining two boats with steel anglers and transporting sugarcane-laden tractors across the river.
