Vegetable prices rise due to cold, supply storage

BENGALURU: The state is gripped by severe cold conditions due to the effect of Cyclone Ditwich. Due to this, the yield has dropped and vegetable prices have shot up.

Some vegetables have crossed the Rs 100 mark per kg, while the price of drumstick is in the range of Rs 500 per kg. The chilly weather has been around for the past week and the prices of vegetables are scorching the pockets of the people.

Most vegetable prices have risen; drumstick is being sold at Rs 510 rupees per kilogram at Hopcoms outlets. In the retail markets, a single drumstick costs Rs 50, and a pair costs Rs 100. With prices so high, people say they cannot even think of buying drumstick.

Tomato prices have already hit the Rs 70-90 mark and other vegetables are slowly reaching the Rs 100 per kg mark.

Tomato prices are rising day by day. In the market, tomatoes is being sold for Rs 70 to 90 per kg. For the past year, tomato farmers were distressed because of the low price, but now that tomato prices have improved and farmers seem happy to be getting value for their hard work.
