Two groups clash on Udupi road with swords, bang cars; 3 arrested so far

The two groups fought with swords and even banged the cars. One person was knocked down by one of the cars.

UDUPI: Two groups, armed with swords, sticks and stones, fought with each others, banging cars, which left at least one person grievously injured after he was knocked down by one of the cars. The incident occurred on the national highway near Sharada Mantap in Kunjibettu here a few days ago and three people have been arrested so far.

In a video shot by a resident of an apartment in the vicinity, two groups, said to be belonging to the Garuda gang, can be seen chasing each other with swords, banging cars and knocking down one of them. Both cars were badly damaged in the incident. It is said that an argument broke out between the two groups over using one of the cars for criminal activities.

So far, Ishaq of Kaup, Rabiq of Gujjarabettu and Saqlain have been arrested and the police are on the lookout for the other accused. Police superintendent Dr Arun Kumar said the police have seized two cars, two two-wheelers, swords and daggers from the accused.

The SP said the two groups which engaged in the fight are of the same gang. “A case was registered in connection with the incident on May 20. There was animosity among some members of the gang which led to the incident. The gang is weakened and fights erupt from time to time”, the SP said.

The Garuda gang of Kaup is notorious for cattle thefts, extortion, theft, violence, peddling narcotics among others, and several cases have been registered against them.
