BENGALURU: The city traffic police have come up with a plan to use new technology to ease traffic on major roads. They have now decided to install hi-tech cameras on high-rise buildings to monitor traffic.
Bengaluru’s traffic congestion has gained notoriety across the country. The traffic police are looking for new technology to solve the traffic congestion on the major roads. Initially, four or five drones were used to monitor traffic congestion on the roads. As the maintenance of drone cameras is difficult, the traffic police are looking for other technological options.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M N Anuchet said PTZ (Pan, Tilt and Zoom) cameras are being installed on high-rise buildings at 12 high-density traffic roads in the city. The cameras will operate 24/7, 365 days and are adjustable to all-weather conditions. The PTZ camera has multiple features and can capture moving objects clearly. The department has listed a total of 20 congested roads in the city for installation of the cameras.
“The camera support 34X optical zoom, which is used to view and capture faraway objects like licence plates or faces. The police can turn the camera in high traffic areas to learn about the distance of traffic blocks. If ambulances and fire engines are caught in traffic, they can clear them quickly with the help of these cameras”, he added.
The traffic police have decided to install PTZ cameras on main roads including Old Madras Road, Old Airport Road, Hosur Road, Ballari Road, Mysuru Road, Tumkur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Varthur Road, Magadi Road, West of Chord Road and Hennur Main Road.
