BENGALURU: Traffic in Bengaluru has increased by 18 pc to 20 pc after the bike taxi ban, according to TomTom Traffic Index data. The ban, which came into effect on June 16, was enforced due to concerns over safety and regulatory issues, but it has led to a surge in private vehicles usage, resulting in congested roads.

As a result, commuters have been forced to switch to private vehicles or autorickshaws, adding to the city’s already congested roads. During peak hours, like 7pm, traffic congestion has exceeded typical levels, with a significant rise in vehicle density. Heavy traffic was also seen on weekends, including Sundays.

The TomTom Traffic Index analysed traffic growth figures from June 16 to 22. According to the data, 18 per cent rise in traffic congestion was seen on June 16 , 22 per cent on June 17 and 18, 16 per cent on June 19 and 20, 18 per cent on June 21 and 13 per cent on June 22.

The bike taxi ban had sparked protests from gig workers and commuters who rely on affordable and efficient transportation. The state government is facing criticism for not providing viable alternatives, leading to increased traffic congestion and economic losses.

The commuters are spending more time on roads, increasing transportation costs, and increasing frustration among daily commuters.
