Tourism dept cracks down on illegal resorts after woman’s death in adventure sport mishap

The Tourism Department has begun issuing notices to resorts/homestays to legalise their operations.

RAMANAGARA: Days after a hospital employee died while taking part in a zipline adventure sport at a resort in the district, the Tourism Department has detected more than 30 such establishments running without permission and flouting safety guidelines. The resorts have now been issued notices seeking a reply within three days failing which they will be shut down.

The department has also registered cases against the resort owners and is cracking down on all such illegal establishments and homestays. A woman lost her life after the zipline cable snapped at Jungle Trail Resort in Bettahalli village in Harohalli taluk a few days ago. She had gone to the resort with colleagues.

After breakfast, Ranjini (35), originally from Attibele, went to try out the zipline on the resort premises when she lost his life. Ranjini died on the spot after the zipline cable snapped and she fell down. It is alleged that the woman lost her life due to the negligence of the resort staff.

A Tourism Department official, “The Jungle Trail incident was unfortunate. They had been issued a notice earlier and told to stop the adventure activities, but they continued with it. Following the death of the guest, the tourism committee held a meeting under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner to identify resorts without permission and to issue notices to legalise them”.

“There are 32 such illegal homestays/resorts in the district and notices have been issued to 15 homestays in the last two days and directed to stop business till they are legalised. If they do not reply within three days, they will be shut down after issuing a second notice”, the official added.
