BENGALURU: Three young men who were looking for a prospective partner on a matrimonial site were cheated of Rs 1.5 crore by a single woman operating under the names ‘Karunya R’ and ‘Karunya Raghav’. The three men, who were looking for a bride online, found that fake profiles were created using beautiful photos of a model and that they were defrauded.
The men proposed to the young woman after checking the profile. She persuaded them to invest in the stock market, promising that the money would double in a few months and that the marriage could then be grand. The woman sent links and bank account numbers, convincing the youths to invest millions of rupees.
On the pretext of helping them, she introduced them to a group she claimed was part of a large company in Abu Dhabi and got them to make further investment. After each of them had invested about Rs 50 lakh, all contact was cut off.
There is suspicion that model photos were used to deceive the youths. Moreover, it is suspected that artificial intelligence (AI) technology was used to make the girl sound authentic.
The three men were scammed through a single fake account. Separate FIRs have been filed at the Whitefield CEN, South CEN and Bengaluru Rural CEN police stations. All three complaints list the same phone number and the same name, and the youths have lost lakhs of rupees in the matrimonial site.
