CHIKKAMAGALUR: Three blackbucks, including two females and one male, all under two years old, an endangered species found only in Karnataka, were hunted near Basuru Kaval, a protected area in Chikmagalur district. The incident has raised suspicions, as the authorities quickly cremated the animals without a thorough investigation.
The authorities conducted a post-mortem examination without a wildlife veterinarian present, which has led to allegations of a cover-up. Locals accuse the authorities of trying to hush up the case. The blackbuck is an endangered species, and the government had set up a protected area for its conservation. However, the hunting of three blackbucks near this area has raised questions about the effectiveness of conservation efforts.
Forest Minister Eshwar Khandre has ordered a thorough investigation and directed officials to submit a report within a week. The government has taken the incident seriously, and the minister has instructed officials to take strict action against those responsible.
The hunting of blackbucks has sparked outrage among environmentalists and locals, who are demanding action against the perpetrators. The incident highlights the need for effective conservation efforts to protect endangered species like the blackbuck, found only in Chikmagalur and Haveri districts.
