Three arrested after govt school teacher garlanded with footwear, paraded in Savanur

HAVERI: Three people have been arrested and a case has been registered against 23 indviduals after a government Urdu school teacher was assaulted and paraded with a garland of footwear around his neck in Savanur on December 10. The English teacher had been accused of sexually harassing students.

Haveri Superintendent of Police Yashoda Vantagodi said the school headmaster had lodged a complaint the next day following which the teacher was arrested and sent to judicial custody. “Based on the teacher’s complaint, the police have arrested three people and registered a case against 23 individuals involved in the attack”, she said.

“The teacher, Jagadish is accused of inappropriate behavior with students, but the attack on him is condemnable. The police are investigating the matter, and action will be taken against those found guilty. The situation is under control and efforts are on to arrest the remaining accused. Two police officials, CPI Devanand and Head Constable Mallikarjun, have been suspended for dereliction of duty as they were present at the spot and did not take any action”.

The SP further said the attack on the teacher was wrong. “Nobody has the right to take the law into their own hands. We are investigating the matter and will take action against those responsible. We’ve formed a special team to arrest the remaining 20 accused, and they will be arrested soon”, she said.
