Thefts at judges’ houses: Three thieves arrested in Bidar, trio flees after failed bid in Hassan

BIDAR, HASSAN: Three thieves, including a father-son duo, were arrested while, in a separate case, three other thieves escaped after a failed bid. In both cases, the targets were houses of judges.

The Bidar police have arrested three interstate thieves who had committed theft at JMFC court additional judge M D Shaij Chowtai on Janwad Raod in the town. The police have recovered gold ornaments worth Rs 1.77 lakh from the trio who have been handed over to judicial custody.

The trio had come by train from Maharashtra and committed the theft. A case had been registered at the New Town police station and they were arrested from Latur in Maharashtra, SP Pradeep Gunti said. Another person involved with the gang escaped and will be arrested soon, he said.

The thieves had camped in Bidar for three days before committing the theft on April 3. They stole valuables worth Rs 8 lakh and the police have recovered 109 gm of gold and 50 gm of silver articles worth Rs 1.77 lakh. The theft was captured on CCTV camera, the SP added.

In another case, three thieves tried to break into a house belonging to a judge at SBM Colony in Hassan on Monday night. However, they fled leaving behing a pistol and an iron rod when an inmate switched on a light.

The house belongs to city civil judge Jaishankar and he has rented it out to Bharat, a fertiliser trader. The thieves entered the house from the backyar and tried to break open the door with the iron rod. On hearing the sound, Bharat’s car driver switched on a light, following which the thieves fled leaving behing the rod and a pistol.

Judge Jaishankar is conducting the trial in a case involving actor Darshan. The police, along with forensic experts, visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered at the Extension police station and further investigation is under way.
