Tension over removal of Rani Chennamma statue on Belagavi outskirts

The statue had been installed by local youths without permission from the civic body.

BELAGAVI: Tension prevailed at Kanbargi Circle on the outskirts of the on Friday night when the city corporation workers, along with the police, had gone there to remove a statue of Kittur Rani Chennamma which had been installed without permission.

Two days ago, locals youths had installed the statue without seeking permission from the Belagavi City Corporation. Even after a deadline was issued, the statue was not removed. Following this, some civic body workers and officials, along with the police, arrived at the spot to remove the statue.

On coming to know of it, locals gathered at the spot and got into an argument with the police and prevented the authorities from removing the statue. In the melee, the police detained one person. Despite efforts to convince the locals, the civic authorities failed to remove the statue and had to return.
