BELAGAVI: The Supreme Court is set to hear a 25-year-old petition filed by the Maharashtra government, claiming 865 villages, towns and cities in Karnataka, including Belagavi, as part of Maharashtra.
The Karnataka government is gearing up to contest the claim, with a high-level meeting held to discuss the next steps. Minister HK Patil will lead the state’s efforts, supported by Ashok Hinchagalli, chairman of the Karnataka State Law Commission, and lawyer Nishant Patil.
The meeting decided to contest Maharashtra’s petition, arguing it should be dismissed. The Karnataka legal team is preparing a strong defence, emphasizing the state’s sovereignty and territorial, and cultural ties to the disputed areas.
The Supreme Court is likely to decide whether to admit Maharashtra’s petition or dismiss it.
