BAGALKOT: A tractor carrying sugarcane fell into the Krishna river near Kankanawadi village in Jamakhandi taluk on Sunday night.
The tractor, loaded with sugarcane, was being transported between two boats using a large iron angler. The boat lost balance, causing the tractor to plunge into the river along with the sugarcane.
Farmer Mallu Narakatti lost around 10 tons of sugarcane, worth lakhs of rupees, which was being transported to Sai Priya Sugar Factory. The tractor is also submerged in the river.
Locals are demanding the construction of a permanent bridge, citing the frequent accidents and difficulties faced by farmers in transporting their produce. The area has been identified as a flood-prone zone, but no permanent bridge has been built.
