BENGALURU: The Health Department has issued guidelines for the control of the spread of conjunctivitis, commonly known as ‘Madras Eye’. Cases of conjunctivitis have been on the rise and the Health Department has suggested precautions against the virus that has created panic in the state.
Conjunctivitis is an eye infection caused by a virus and it mostly occurs when the humidity in the atmosphere increases or in cold weather. This time, the spread of the ‘Madras Eye’ virus started before the monsoon in the state. In view of increasing cases, the Health Department has issued guidelines for people to take precautionary measures.
Symptoms of Madras Eye Disease:
* Eye redness, watery eyes.
* Excessive tears.
* Itching in the eye.
* Significant pain, burning, scratchiness,
* Can’t see light or brightness (exposure to light).
* Blurred vision.
* Blepharitis known as granulated eyelids (swelling in eyelids).

Precautionary measures
* Give priority to individual cleanliness.
* A healthy person should avoid direct eye contact with an infected person.
* Handkerchiefs and other items used by an infected person should not be used by others.
* Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
* Infected persons should be treated immediately if they have cold, fever and cough.
* Infected persons should consult an ophthalmologist immediately, if irritation has increased.
* A healthy person should avoid direct eye contact with an infected person.
* Handkerchiefs and other items used by an infected person should not be used by others.

* Clean the eyes with clear water.
* Get treatment from a doctor as soon as the infection is detected.

*Wear protective, transparent goggles in order to prevent eyes from exposure to light and avoid risk of secondary infection.
