BAGALKOT: A spurned lover attempted to kill a woman by setting her on fire for refusing his love proposal and killed himself by pouring petrol in Ilkal Gudur in the district on Sunday. Both were admitted to a hospital by locals.
The deceased has been identified Afzal Solhapur (27) while Netravati is undergoing treatment at the district hospital in Bagalkot. Afzal was shifted to KIMS hospital in Hubballi in critical condition, but succumbed to his burn injuries.
The accused Afzal was allegedly in love with Netravati, but she had got engaged with another man. Afzal could not tolerate this and decided to kill her. He poured petrol on Netravati and set her on fire, then doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire.
A case has been registered at the Amingad police station and further investigation is under way.
