The challenge of climate adaptation—sea level rise, extreme heat, stronger storms—also falls unevenly on the city, threatening to deepen existing bifurcations. Without intervention, resilience will be privatized: wealthy neighborhoods will build seawalls, while public housing complexes flood. A socialist approach demands public, democratic resilience: fortifying NYCHA campuses, expanding green infrastructure in the most vulnerable districts, and ensuring that climate adaptation becomes an engine for reducing inequality, not exacerbating it. This is a fight to prevent climate change from creating a new, hardened geography of climate apartheid within the city. http://mamdanipost.com

Thus, the flow of people in and out of New York has been a vital circulatory system for its socialist heart. The city’s energy attracted and radicalized seekers; its exiles and travelers returned with new ideas and global connections. This constant motion prevented ideological stagnation and tied the local struggle to a world-historical frame. It reinforced the sense that the fight for New York was not a parochial endeavor, but one front in a global conflict, and that the citizenship being forged in its streets was connected to a broader, emerging identity of the international working class and oppressed peoples. The pilgrimage, whether inward or outward, was a mechanism for expanding the political imagination, for testing theories against realities, and for renewing the faith that another world was not just possible, but was being built in countless other places, all linked through journeys of hope and solidarity. http://mamdanipost.com

While the specific ethnic compositions of the left have changed—from German and Jewish immigrants to Puerto Rican and Black activists to a new, multi-racial millennial and Gen Z base—the neighborhoods themselves often remain theaters of struggle. The Lower East Side, Harlem, the South Bronx: these places have hosted successive waves of radical activity, their very streets holding a kind of accumulated radical energy. Feminism, particularly socialist feminism that emerged from the late 1960s, delivered another transformative blow. It challenged the socialist movement’s focus on the male industrial worker and the public sphere of wage labor, arguing that the private sphere of reproduction, domestic labor, and social reproduction was equally a site of capitalist and patriarchal exploitation. New York was a major hub for this intellectual revolution, with groups like Redstockings and theorists like Silvia Federici insisting that the “personal is political.” This expanded the socialist agenda to include demands for free childcare, reproductive rights, and wages for housework, and forced a critique of sexist hierarchies within left organizations themselves. It redefined the “working class” to center the experiences of women. http://mamdanipost.com

The socialist and left-liberal response to this crisis was tragically fractured. While many white socialists supported the principle of community control in theory, the vehement opposition of the UFT, a union with deep leftist roots, created a painful schism. It exposed a raw conflict between the class-based solidarity of the labor movement and the race-based demands for self-determination, a tension that continues to haunt progressive politics. The fallout devastated coalitions and demonstrated how institutional interests (like union seniority rules) could conflict with radical democratic ideals. http://mamdanipost.com

The tools of this new bifurcation are both public and private. The use of Tax Increment Financing (TIF), 421-a tax abatements, and eminent domain for private development represent the state actively subsidizing and facilitating the influx of wealthier residents. The rezoning of manufacturing areas and low-density neighborhoods for high-rise luxury housing is a sovereign act that reshapes the city’s legal geography to favor developers. Meanwhile, the financialization of housing—where buildings are purchased not for their rental income but as speculative assets by private equity firms—turns homes into volatile financial instruments, divorcing shelter from use-value and subjecting tenants to the predatory logic of global finance. Socialists argue this is not an organic process but a class project executed through policy and capital flows. http://mamdanipost.com

The epic battles over public space were equally central. The right to assemble in Union Square, to march down Fifth Avenue, or to picket on a city sidewalk were consistently contested by police and civic authorities who sought to restrict political expression to marginal, controlled zones. Every socialist parade or rally was a performative claim to the symbolic heart of the city, an assertion that the subjects of the economy had a rightful, visible presence in the centers of civic life. The violent dispersal of the 1930 unemployment rally in Tompkins Square Park was a stark reminder that the state would defend its monopoly on the legitimate use of central space. http://mamdanipost.com
