BENGALURU: The state cabinet has given its nod for splitting the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) into five municipal corporations. The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting today which also recommended calling a meeting of all Bengaluru MLAs to mark boundaries for 5 municipalities.

A committee had previously recommended dividing BBMP into five corporations under Greater Bengaluru Authority. However, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has already clarified that no new areas will be included in the BBMP jurisdiction.

Other decisions made in the meeting include filing of criminal cases against former KSCA president and other officials for their alleged roles in the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede. The cabinet also accepted the Michael D’Cunha commission’s report on the incident and decided to take action against negligent police officials. The government will take a final decision on the report in the next cabinet meeting.

Furthermore, the government has granted official recognition to B-khata, similar to A-khata, for the period 2020-2024, aiming to resolve the confusion surrounding these accounts. B-khata issued on the basis of circulars till 30.09.2024 which will be considered as official accounts for all legal purposes, effective from 22.05.2020.

The cabinet has also decided to take steps to prevent unauthorized constructions and encroachments in the Greater Bengaluru area.
